Suction Catheter – A Critical Care Equipment
by remo028 on May 10, 2011
A suction catheter is a long tube used to clear secretions in a trach tube, which is employed to help critically ill and injured patients in breathing. While breathing through upper airway, it makes the air warm, clean, and moistened but when a tracheostomy tube is used it bypasses these mechanisms and hence the breathing air becomes dry, cool, and less clean. This leads to increased production of mucous, which may plug the trach tube and so suctioning has to be done to remove the mucous from the airway. Suctioning is done by inserting a catheter into the patients’ breathing tube and the other end of the catheter is connected to a collection canister and the suction generating device. Based on the secretions the frequency of suctioning is determined, so ventilation and oxygenation is consistent in patients. This procedure is commonly done for children with respiratory pathology, neurological disorder, and when an artificial airway is used. Though usage of suction catheter result in burning sensation in the lungs, this discomfort remains for a very short period of time. You can buy a male external catheter from ojmedical.
